Attention: Conewago Township Customers

A scheduled water shutdown will begin at 9:00 PM on Thursday, June 4. During this time, affected customers may experience low water pressure or a temporary loss of service. Once service is restored, you may experience air in the lines or discolored water for a short period of time. If this occurs, we recommend running cold water for several minutes until it clears.

Thank you for your patience as we complete this necessary work.

Our Timely Automatic Payment Program (TAP) will be discontinued on June 30, 2026.

Tips to Prepare Your Water Pipes from Freezing Temperatures

Winter weather is here, and the forecasted temperatures are expected to drop over the next several days. The York Water Company reminds our community to take steps now to protect the water pipes leading to homes and businesses. Steps taken now can minimize the risk of frozen pipes which can lead to costly repairs.

Tips to help prepare your plumbing:

  • Eliminate sources of cold air near water lines and protect your pipes. Check for pipes in areas of your home that might be unheated. Such areas may include basements, attics, garages, crawl spaces, and exterior walls. Where pipes are exposed to cold, wrap them with insulation or heat tape. Both items can easily be found at local hardware and home improvement stores or contact a plumber to install it for you.
  • Know how to shut off your water. Locate your main water shut-off valve. In many homes, it is located near the water meter or close to where the water pipe enters the home. Once you’ve located the valve, test it by closing it. Once completely closed, check your sinks and other water fixtures to ensure that the shut-off valve is working properly. If no water comes out, then the valve is working properly.

In very cold conditions, if your water is no longer flowing or it is a very slow trickle, your pipes may be frozen. The best course of action is to contact a local plumber to help you thaw out your pipes and to check for and make any necessary repairs.

If a frozen pipe bursts and water floods your home, it is important to turn off the water at the shut-off valve and call your water provider immediately. For customers of The York Water Company, our team is available at 717-845-3601 Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and at 717-848-2984 after hours. Once your water is off, call a licensed plumber for help. This is especially important if you cannot find the broken pipe, or it is inaccessible.

York Water also reminds the community that while most water providers, including The York Water Company, own the water meter that is connected to homes and businesses, it is the customer’s responsibility to protect the water meter from freezing or other damage. Community members are encouraged to insulate your water meter with insulation, heat tape, cardboard box, old blanket, or dedicated meter cover.
