Position Summary

SUMMARY:  As an intern at The York Water Company, you will have the opportunity to put your collegiate experiences and knowledge into action by working on medium to high impact projects by researching historic records, creating data discovery and analysis strategies, performing quality assurance (QA) of records, and working in the company’s customer database and GIS environment. Throughout your time you will be exposed to our operations, participate in informational sessions, and collaborate with other professionals. You will be introduced to tools and resources that will help you grow both professionally and personally.

Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Review historical water system records and record pertinent information for compliance activities.
  1. Analyze service line data and report compliance progress through dashboarding and data analysis.
  1. Perform QA of service line data reported by employees and customers to assure data integrity.
  1. Assist with customer database review and update activities.
  1. Update company records, including but not limited to, Oracle and GIS.
  1. Assist various departments with GIS-related office and field activities.
  1. Communicate with other team members in order to provide support.
  1. Handle all proprietary information in a confidential manner.
  1. Maintain security of department equipment and Company files/information.
  1. Strong customer service attitude and an ability to adapt to changing environment.
  1. Consistently demonstrate positive and professional behavior with all individuals contacted on behalf of the Company including employees.
  1. Handle other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Working toward a BS in GIS, Cartography, Geography or similar course of study.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS;

  • Valid PA driver’s license.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficient use of standard office equipment and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Good understanding of ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online).
  • Some familiarity with GPS equipment and field data collection.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong comprehension, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Strong planning, time management, and organizational skills with the ability to discuss project timelines and resources required to complete projects.
  • Strong mathematical/calculation skills and ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Physical Demands

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Regularly required to use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently is required to stand, walk and sit.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Required to talk, hear and see.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
  • Occasionally required to list and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Required to ascend and descend stairs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Dexterity is required with the ability to operate hand tools, power tools, machine controls and computer controls.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, respirators, and other required PPE.
  • Ability to work under stress and work additional hours in order to meet deadlines and the requirements of the position during emergency situations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Typically works in an office environment.
  • Occasionally works in outside weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Travel on public roadways between company facilities.
  • May at times be exposed to chemicals and toxic substances and must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation.
